Things to do in Jackson, MS this weekend: CelticFest and more


Live music, ax throwing and whiskey tasting are on the menu for the annual CelticFest Mississippi this weekend.

The 31st annual celebration of ‘all things Irish and Scottish’ takes place Friday and Saturday at Lakeshore Park at Ross Barnett Reservoir in Brandon.

Friday hours are 5-10 p.m. and the evening includes a petting zoo, shopping, and dancing. Those interested in ax throwing can do so at 6 p.m. but must sign a waiver. General admission is $8 on Fridays and parking is free.

The fun continues from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday with more music and dancing, sheepdog demonstrations and competitive Highland games. Saturday tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for ages 62 and older, military (active duty/retired with ID), and students 14 through college.

If spicy food is your thing, head to The District’s second annual summer celebration. Don’t miss the hot sauce contest at 1 p.m. There will be dunk tanks, live music and tours with costumed characters for the kids.

If you’re looking to add a fur baby to your family, there might be one for you. Come and adopt different animals that you and your family can bring home and love.

Admission: Free. Pay only for the pet you adopt. Those interested in adopting a pet can register in advance for pre-approval.

Let loose at Funtime Skateland

Anyone can hang out and listen to music while skating with family and friends. Those 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older.

When: noon to 4 p.m. and 7pm-10pm Saturday

Where: Funtime Skateland, 123 Legion Lake Road, Pearl

Admission: The cost is $8 per person for the afternoon session and $12 for the evening session. Get $2 off if you bring your own skates.
