After Sterling’s women’s basketball team appeared to correct it with two wins from their first two losses, the Tigers must return to the drawing board. Last week they lost three straight games to Yuma (final score 54-27), Nebraska’s Ogallala (final score 48-33) and Prospect Ridge Academy (final score 44-30).
In the first clash against Yuma, sophomore Ailynn Wright led her team with seven points, while junior Jalyssa Maker followed with six of her own. The Tigers will now have to try to regroup as they pursue their third win of the season. They return to action on Saturday to face Highland at 1 p.m. ET.
This will be their last game before the winter break, during which they will have a few weeks to smooth out the wrinkles and come back stronger for the second part of the season.
Caliche boys basketball splits their two games in week two
The Caliche boys’ basketball was able to keep the flame going, at least for a little while, after finishing third at the Carlile Classic. The Buffaloes continued that momentum in their Friday night clash against Fleming, in which they beat the Wildcats with a 59-55 victory.
Senior Kyser Martinez and junior Tanner Gerk took most of the offensive responsibility, scoring 21 and 17 points respectively, to give the Buffaloes the boost they needed to secure the victory. Gerk nearly finished a double-double performance but fell just short with nine rebounds. Senior Reegan Skeels contributed eight rebounds and eight assists on the effort.
The next day, the Buffaloes had to travel to a hostile environment in Haxtun No.1 and couldn’t keep up with the Fightin ‘Bulldogs ultra-athletes. They fell with a score of 89-40. Next, Caliche will host Potter-Dix from Nebraska on Saturday.
