Unique Selections – Mexican Open at Vidanta

Alternate – Davis Riley

Having the Zurich Classic and the Mexican Open in back-to-back weeks makes me question a lot of things, the main one being this: does the PGA Tour need NFL-style “Bye” weeks? Well, action is action, I guess, so we’re heading south of the border for this all-new event.

Jon Rahm is undoubtedly head and shoulders above the rest of this field, but using him in an OAD contest this week is a lot like using a bazooka to kill a spider. After Rahm things get pretty murky, pretty fast, which is normally a sign to start thinking outside the box.

As I was considering going in several directions for this event, I landed on what is quite a vanilla pick in Gary Woodland. I have always liked his talent, but I have been very concerned about his health in recent years. Woodland seems to have put those worries to bed for now, as he’s looked downright sharp in recent months posting a pair of top-fives at the Florida Swing and a top-10 at Valero. This layout should suit him well and he is not a player I have big plans for in the future.

I’ve been beating the drum all week on every platform that this could be a place Tony Finau can reunite with the winner’s circle, and I’m sticking to my guns in the RotoBaller OAD contest.

Finau is the only golfer in this area who ranks in the top 16 in all categories on my model, and his immaculate iron game should fit in well on a course where he will get slower greens. This second part is important because he can be a bit more forceful and aggressive with his putts if he can chase for four days, and I think he leaves Mexico as a champion if he continues to trend positively with his second shots.

In great evils, great means. I need a good performance this week and I have no choice but to take the big favorite, Jon Rahm. If we dig deeper, it’s a bit of a two-part choice.

First of all, Jon Rahm is the best player on the pitch this week by a wide margin. If this plays like a birdie fest, Rahm has made it clear he’s not a fan of putting contests. That being said, the field is weak and Rahm is hungry for victory. Even though it’s not the most ideal setup for the Spaniard, I find it hard to believe he would make the trip to Mexico if he wasn’t serious about winning.

Second, Rahm has been a bit disappointing this year. It’s not that he had a bad year because he didn’t. The results simply did not confirm the fact that he became an almost weekly favorite. As other players start catching him I don’t feel the need to save Rahm for a big event as I’m not entirely sure he doesn’t have a better chance of winning one than some of the other best players in the world.

Chris Kirk ranks among the top five players on the court this week. He excels at what the community calls “resort” style golf courses. He is also a birdie machine. If Chris can have a good putting week, I can see him pushing hard to win this week. As for Tony, I like him on this track too. He ranks 15th in my model, which is a bit surprising given his recent results. I really don’t believe you can go wrong with either player this week, but for me, I’m going with Kirk. I think it’s a bit more reliable at the moment.
