LITCHFIELD – Barbara E. MacFarlane, 85, died on December 1, 2021 in MaineGeneral in Augusta from covid. She was born to Gardiner by Lewis and Bernice Mooers. She graduated from Gardiner High School and attended annual reunions with her classmates (until last year) and participated in meeting planning.
She was a military wife – being stationed at Parris Island, SC; San Diego, California; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Long Island, NY and Argentia, Newfoundland. She held several jobs, most notably at a radio station in New York. When her late husband Larry retired from USMC they moved to Litchfield, she went to work as a chief accountant in the Augusta School Department from where she retired in 1986.
She was an active member of the Litchfield Plains Baptist Church; Augusta Nature Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a long-time member of the St. Andrews Society of Maine and volunteered at the Highland Games at Thomas Point in Brunswick. She was the hangout leader for Boys & Girls Scouts.
In addition to a great love for the Lord, she loved gardening and was proud of her beautiful flowers and vegetables and attended them regularly at the annual Litchfield Fair. She loved to cook and can; playing the piano, swimming and boating in Pleasant Pond; spoiling her grandsons, giving refuge to several teenagers over the years and above all she loved her family.
She loved to travel with Larry. They visited Scotland and Moncton, New Brunswick, where they worked on family genealogies. They spent time at Moosehead Lake; Mount Loon; Mexico, Italy, Austria and travels to Connecticut to spend Thanksgiving with Larry’s brother Ken, his wife Priscilla and his family. They were snowbirds and spent many winters in Florida to get away from the Maine climate.
She was predeceased by her parents; her siblings Altha Purdy and Robert Mooers and her husband of 60 years, Captain Larry S. MacFarlane.
She is survived by her children, Michael MacFarlane and Kathy Conroy of Portland, David MacFarlane of Litchfield (who has been her guardian for the past 8 years), Victoria Veilleux and her husband John of Winslow; grandchildren, Christopher MacFarlane, Brian, Ian (wife Stephanie) and Kyle Soldano (living partner Anna Dolbow); great-grandchildren, Atreyu, Logan, Maylen and Cameron; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Priscilla, Claude and James MacFarlane; several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, December 9 from noon to 1 p.m. with a funeral service to be followed at the funeral home.
