WACO, TX- Baylor Men’s Basketball will be one of four teams competing in the 2022 Continental Tire Main Event, which will be held Nov. 18-20 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Bears will open the event against 2019 national champion Virginia Cavaliers at 6 p.m. CT on November 18, on ESPN2, followed by UCLA and Illinois at 8:30 p.m., on ESPNU. It will be just the second all-time meeting between the Bears and Cavaliers and the first since 1968.
The winning teams will meet in the championship game at 2:00 p.m. CT on November 20, while the losing teams will play a consolation match at 4:30 p.m., both on ESPN. The four teams have combined for three final fours and two national championships in the last three NCAA tournaments.
Baylor last played in Las Vegas to open the COVID-delayed 2020-21 season, sweeping a pair of games against Louisiana and Washington to begin an 18-game winning streak that ultimately led to the program’s first national championship. Even without a head coach Scott Drew, who was absent due to COVID protocols, Baylor won those games by an average of 32 points. Jared Butler led the team, averaging 18.5 points in both games.
UCLA hold a 3-1 series advantage over BU, the last meeting being in 1975. Baylor won its first game in four tries against Illinois when the Bears beat fifth-ranked Illini at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 82-69, Dec. 21. 2, 2020, in Indianapolis, Ind. Current senior guard Adam Flagler led the Bears with 18 points in 29 minutes of action in just his third game in green and gold.
BU also announced that they will be taking part in the Big12-Big East Challenge, taking on Marquette at Fiserv Forum on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. This match will be followed by a rematch of the 2021 National Championship game against Gonzaga at Sanford’s Pentagon. in Sioux Falls, SD on Friday, December 2, 2022. The Bears will also face the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, January 28, 2023, in a rematch of their 2021 Elite Eight encounter, an 82-71 win over Baylor . The program for the full season will be published later.
The Bears are coming off a promising performance in the inaugural GLOBL Jam, where they narrowly fell in the league game against the Brazilian Under-23 side 77-73. Playing without four of their best players, Baylor was led by rookie Keyonte George, who scored 37 points in a 93-87 semi-final win over Team Canada and averaged 22.8 points in five games.
