HANNIBAL — Put on your kilt and head to the mud volleyball court for a new game at the Big River Steampunk Festival this Labor Day weekend.
The Highland games will be played at the Mud Volleyball field in downtown Hannibal on Saturday September 3rd and online registration to participate in the games is now open.
It will be Scotland vs Ireland in a Clan Battle format and the registered athletes will compete against each other. The games have a history dating back to the 11th century, when men attempted to outdo each other by throwing objects like stones, in a display of manly strength and endurance.
From stone throwing to the traditional caber toss of the Highland game, where competitors throw a tall, slender pole called a “caber”. In Scotland, the caber is usually made from a larch tree and it can be between 16 and 20 feet tall and weigh between 90 and 150 pounds.
And everything is done in a kilt.
That’s right, all athletes are required to wear a kilt and are also encouraged to Steampunk themselves.
The Big River Steampunk Festival takes place over the four-day Labor Day weekend every year and this four-day event will leave you in awe and awe. With each day filled with events and vendors, there will be something for everyone.
The Big River Steampunk Festival began in 2014 with the original intention of supporting the Hannibal History Museum and over the years has grown to become one of the largest outdoor steampunk festivals in the world.
Big River Steampunk has always drawn a crowd, since the first year it was estimated that a few hundred people might show up, but a few thousand people flocked to the festival instead. Today, the event attracts over 20,000 people each year with participants from around the world, including England and Australia.
You can dive deeper into Steampunk Weekend with more specialty events. All specialty events require tickets which can be purchased online until August 20 and during the event at the information booth or at the door.
