File photo shows Philippine Ministry – Archdiocese of Los Angeles celebrating Santacruzan

Los Angeles, CA – The Philippine Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will celebrate its 17th Marian Coronation of Santacruzan May on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, located at 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles , California 90012.

Rev. Rodel G Balagtas will be the Celebrant, Filipino Ministry Liaison for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Pastor of Incarnation Church in Glendale.

The Santacruzan was first held in the 1800s in Malolos, Bulacan in the Philippines. This is a religious procession commemorating the quest of Queen Helena of Constantinople and her son, Constantine the Great, to find the True Cross: the cross believed to be the one on which Jesus was crucified. It has since become part of the Filipino tradition focused on young people and their devotion to imitating the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The celebration will consist of the presentation of the “Sagalas”, young girls and women who make up the courtyard of honor for the procession of the Blessed Mary. This is followed by a celebration of the Eucharistic Mass and then the coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace. The offering of flowers by the young participants from the Archdiocese concludes this Catholic celebration.

Led by the Philippine ministry, various religious and devotional groups, many community, cultural, civic and non-profit organizations are expected to join their banners with their icons of the Virgin Mary. The recommended dress code is Filipiniana.

A 6:30 p.m. dinner dance will follow at Casa Italiana located at 1051 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012. For inquiries about tickets and souvenir program advertisements, please call Santacruzan Event Chairman Arnel Bailon , at (818) 310-3663.
