Brooklyn Street Local, known for its brunches, poutines and quiches, has closed its doors. The announcement was made in a long October 14 post on the restaurant’s Facebook page by co-owner Devéri Gifford.
The challenges, including the pandemic, “have taken their toll,” Gifford wrote.

Gifford opened the restaurant with her husband Jason Yates in 2012. The Canadian couple “immediately felt welcomed and supported, and arranged the restaurant as we went,” said Gifford. Yates left the company two years ago.
Gifford doesn’t say a final goodbye to his Michigan Avenue restaurant and still owns the building. She says there’s a plan for the space and Brooklyn Street will be hosting pop-ups in the coming months. He will be selling his quiche and poutine as well as brunch items through Eastern Market and Metro Detroit Crunchy Club.
“We’re downsizing, pivoting again and trying to find a way to do it in a sustainable way,” Gifford wrote.
“Love Life” inspires romantic dinners
HBO Max is teaming up with dating app BLK and Black Restaurant Week to host a series of romantic evenings at black-owned restaurants in four US cities, including Detroit. The events will take place Tuesday through Friday and will celebrate the premiere of the second season of HBO Max’s “Love Life” series.
The show returns Thursday with three episodes starring character Marcus Watkins, played by Emmy nominee and executive producer William Jackson Harper (Chidi Anagonye of “The Good Place), who is rebuilding his life after the sudden end of his marriage.
In Detroit, Central Kitchen + Bar, Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails and Good Times on the Avenue are there. Each restaurant will offer personalized food and cocktail menus inspired by the characters and events of the series. There will be themed placements and a neon “Love Life” sign for photo ops.
If you can’t make it to restaurants, BLK and “Love Life” social media will post recipes that you can make at home.

The Benefits of the No Child Hungry Cookbook
Sahana Vij was recently chosen as one of the Top 10 Girls Who Change the World from People Magazine for his efforts to feed others. The self-taught Seattle-area pastry chef was inspired by learning to cook and bake at a young age while volunteering with her mother at a Seattle shelter. Vij’s parents are from Canton and Farmington Hills.
Now 18-year-old Vij has come out with a baking book to alleviate children’s hunger. “Bake Away: Twenty Recipes Capturing the Spirit of Creativity, Experience, and Express” (Mascot Books, $ 25.95) is out this week.
The 20 recipes featured are inspired by Vij’s travels, including visits to Michigan to see relatives. Vij also photographed all of the recipes.
Michigan recipes created by Vij include Bloomfield Hills Granola and Ann Arbor Berry Lemonade. It will donate 100% of the royalties on the books to No Child Hungry, a national organization dedicated to the fight against child hunger.

Drinking with dogs Halloween event
Canine to Five, a daycare and boarding house for dogs in Detroit, will celebrate Halloween at its next Drinking with Dogs gathering.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Congregation, 9321 Rosa Parks Blvd. in Detroit. Monthly dog-friendly events took a hiatus for a while due to COVID-19 restrictions, but returned this summer.
Tuesday’s rally is free to the public and will feature over 50 dogs and owners in Halloween costumes. Food and drinks will be offered by the Congregation.
“We are delighted that we can be back this year with one of our favorite events. It’s so amazing to see the community hanging out with their four-legged friends in such creative costumes, ”said Liz Blondy, owner of Canine to Five, in a press release. “Our mission is to create a strong community of dog lovers in the city of Detroit. This annual event is a great way to get together and celebrate.
There will be a costume contest and a jury. To participate, dogs must be well-behaved, kept on a leash and up to date with their vaccinations.
The cocktail event features the best bartenders
The Detroit River Cocktail Showdown, now in its third year, returns to downtown Wyandotte on Friday. This competition will feature the best bartenders from the area’s bars and restaurants showcasing their best-prepared cocktails.
Entertainment will be provided by the local group Fifty Amp Fuse.
Participating bartenders will receive an assigned alcohol and create a craft cocktail for the guests. Only one will be named best bartender according to his creation.
Cocktail samples will be prepared with premium liquors and ingredients including Tito Craft Vodka, Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon, Roku Gin, Patron and more.
The event will take place in a heated tent set up in downtown Wyandotte on the river side behind Whiskeys on the Water and in the parking lot between Oak and Elm streets.
The cocktail sampling is from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $ 30 for 10 sample tickets, a voting card, and a commemorative drink. A pack of four friends costs $ 100. You can buy tickets on cocktail-showdown.com. A cash bar will be available with a cover charge of $ 5 for those who do not purchase the sample package, including designated drivers. You must be 21 years old to participate.
